Wow – what a night for British talent!

There were big winners (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and some significant losers (“A Star is Born”) at last night’s Golden Globe awards. Here’s a run-down of the winners in the Film categories. (Ones with * against them are ones I have yet to see/review… many have not yet come out at the UK cinema).

Best motion picture – drama

I personally wouldn’t have picked this set of films for the category, but “Bohemian Rhapsody” seems a surprise winner:  all the pre-show talk seemed to be with “A Star is Born” (a film that I was personally very luke-warm about!).

Best motion picture – comedy or musical

DELIGHTED about this one. “Green Book” was my personal film of the year from last year.

Best performance by an actor in a motion picture – drama

  • Winner: Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Bradley Cooper – A Star is Born
  • Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate*
  • Lucas Hedges – Boy Erased*
  • John David Washington – Black Klansman*

Again, a big surprise when Bradley Cooper was strongly tipped for this one. Well done Rami though, as it is a fine impersonation of the great man and a real crowd-pleaser.

Best performance by an actress in a motion picture – drama

  • Winner: Glenn Close – The Wife*
  • Lady Gaga – A Star is Born
  • Nicole Kidman – Destroyer*
  • Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?*
  • Rosamund Pike – A Private War*

Very short-sighted in this category so can’t comment.

Best performance by an actor in a motion picture – comedy or musical

I get to see Vice in a week or two, and now looking forward to it more. The Awards voters always tend to like a dramatic physical transformation and Bale certainly delivered them one: almost unrecognisable.

Best performance by an actress in a motion picture – comedy or musical

  • Winner: Olivia Colman – The Favourite
  • Emily Blunt – Mary Poppins Returns
  • Elsie Fisher – Eighth Grade*
  • Charlize Theron – Tully*
  • Constance Wu – Crazy Rich Asians*

YEEEESSSSS!  So delighted for Olivia and well deserved (though I am again woefully unsighted in the category… what HAVE I been doing with my time last year!)

Best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a motion picture

  • Winner: Mahershala Ali – Green Book
  • Timothee Chalamet – Beautiful Boy
  • Adam Driver – Black Klansman*
  • Richard E Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?*
  • Sam Rockwell – Vice*

Again, delighted at this recognition for “Green Book” which might bode well for its success at the Oscars.

Best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture

“Beale Street” is not yet out in the UK so is the only performance I am unsighted on.  If I’d chosen a second place it would have been Rachel Weisz in “The Favourite”.

Best director – motion picture

  • Winner: Alfonso Cuaron – Roma*
  • Bradley Cooper – A Star is Born
  • Peter Farrelly – Green Book
  • Spike Lee – Black Klansman*
  • Adam McKay – Vice*

New Years resolution… I really must catch “Roma” on Netflix.

Best screenplay – motion picture

Again delighted at this.  I dare say the coarse language didn’t help “The Favourite” any, but “Green Book” is just deliciously put together.

Best animated film

  • Winner: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*
  • Incredibles 2*
  • Isle of Dogs*
  • Mirai*
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet*

As is evident, I don’t go to many animated features! “Coco” of course was a 2017 film in US eyes.

Best foreign language film

  • Winner: Roma*
  • Capernaum*
  • Girl*
  • Never Look Away*
  • Shoplifters*

I bet Mark Kermode is irritated that “Shoplifters” didn’t win!  I’m afraid with limited free time last year, my trips to Picturehouse to see this sort of film suffered greatly.

Best original score

Not a score that is easy to listen to, but “First Man” gets an A++ for fitting the film, which I guess is the point!

Best original song – motion picture

  • Winner: Shallow – A Star is Born (Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson)
  • All the Stars – Black Panther (Kendrick Lamar)*
  • Girl in the Movies – Dumplin’ (Dolly Parton, Linda Perry)*
  • Requiem for a Private War – A Private War (Annie Lennox)*
  • Revelation – Boy Erased (Troye Sivan)*

Well, it might be a consolation prize but it’s nice that Lady Gaga at least picked up something for “A Star is Born” since she was about the best thing in the film.

I’m always curious to see what others think about nominations & wins, and I loved the format in which you presented your opinions here. Nicely done!
