Another award milestone in the run up to “the big one”.

The Screen Actor’s Guild awards were held in LA last night. The SAG’s are given by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists(SAG-AFTRA) to recognise outstanding performances in film and prime time television. The Golden Globes are a better judge normally as to how the Oscars will go than this one:  here the awards can go all over the place, and so it proved last night!  There were a number of major surprises (“Black Panther”), but once again “A Star is Born” was snubbed.

(Ones with * against them are ones I have yet to see/review… many have not yet come out at the UK cinema).

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

Another surprise win for Malek, which must make him a firm favourite now for the Oscar.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:

The Wife is coming to Sky Cinema next week, so I hope to catch it so I can check out this performance.  I am sorry that Olivia Colman didn’t win through here:  again this must put Close in prime position for the Oscar.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:

  • Winner: Mahershala Ali, ‘Green Book‘
  • Timothee Chalamet, ‘Beautiful Boy
  • Adam Driver, ‘BlacKkKlansman’*
  • Sam Elliott, ‘A Star Is Born
  • Richard E. Grant, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’*

Yayyyy… delighted at this one.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:

Well… that’s a surprise! Always a bit dodgy when an obviously leading actress gets nominated in a supporting role I think.  I’m not unhappy about this win, but I personally think that Rachel Weisz was rather robbed here.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:

One of my favourite awards… recognizing great ensemble casts. Black Panther making its mark again as a game-changing superhero flick.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture:

Another great award category that I have previously suggested should be recognised in the Oscars. And another win for “Black Panther”.  If I were Ton Cruise, I’d be a bit aggrieved about this one…. clearly he would have needed to break both ankles and then run off shot to win!

What did you think?  Who was robbed of an award in your opinion?
