Well, I came back from a short holiday with Covid-19. And I have to say, it’s not been pleasant at all, even with my double jabs. The result is that what with my holiday and then my 10 days of self-isolation, November movies at the cinema have been pretty much off-limits to me.

Current Releases Seen

The only current releases I can comment on first hand are Denis Villeneuve’s epic take on Frank Herbert’s “Dune” (12A) and the Venom sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (15). “Dune” I found to be a joyous cinematic experience. It might be a bit slow for some. But it won’t look like anything special if you wait for it to come on the small screen. If you’ve not seen it yet, can I strongly encourage you to catch it on the biggest screen you can?! “Venom 2”, on the other hand, I would gladly have missed: a tonally inconsistent superhero flick uneasily mixing callous violence with knockabout comedy. I hated it!

Current Releases To See!

Current movies I am itching to see are Edgar Wright’s psychological horror “Last Night in Soho” (18) (which I’ve heard great things about) and also “Spencer” (12A), the Princess Diana work of fiction from the director of “Jackie” (which I’ve heard very mixed reactions to). I also want to try to catch “The French Dispatch”: Wes Anderson’s latest which looks as artful and quirky as you would expect a Wes Anderson film to look! The new Marvel flick “Eternals” looks dire, but I will probably need to go and confirm my fears!

A Look Ahead

Looking further out at some of the highlight releases coming out before the end of the year, we have:

  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife”: the sequel nobody wanted or asked for, starring Paul Rudd;
  • Belfast”: Kenneth Branagh’s critically acclaimed movie on “The Troubles” of the last 60’s;
  • King Richard”: the story behind the rise of tennis stars the Williams sisters, with Will Smith as their trainer-father;
  • House of Gucci”: Ridley Scott’s been busy, with the recent excellent “Last Duel” and now this new biopic on three decades of “love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder” behind the Gucci fashion empire;
  • The Beatles: Get Back”: Peter Jackson’s documentary promises a loving trawl through a lot of previously unseen material;
  • Being the Ricardos”: a biopic by Aaron Sorkin on the dramatic behind-the-scenes life of Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem). Sounds intriguing;
  • West Side Story”: Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic musical;
  • Sing 2”: a belated follow up to a kid-favourite animation;
  • The King’s Man”: a suspiciously delayed prequel story to the Kingsman secret service films with Ralph Fiennes. (This was trailered before the FIRST lockdown!). And;
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home”: A multi-verse-teasing sequel featuring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and the interesting return of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus!

A wide range of interesting stuff there. Hopefully, these November movies, and the December movies look-ahead, will tickle your interest in getting out to the cinema during these dark and damp autumn days. Watch out for my reviews of these and other new releases on my blog: on the website at http://bob-the-movie-man.com, or via my video reviews on Tiktok, Youtube and Instagram (or just search for @onemannsmovies).

Happy viewing!
