A One Mann’s Movies review of “Our Father” (2024) (From the 2024 Irish Film Festival, London).
A short film I saw at last month’s Irish Film Festival, “Our Father” is the directorial debut of British comedienne Aisling Bea. Aisling has always tickled my funny-bone and this delightful little short is hopefully the gateway to the direction of a comedy feature film. Based on this work, that is something I would certainly look forward to seeing.
Bob the Movie Man Rating:
“Our Father” Plot Summary:
Aoife is struggling to come out to her father Derek. But the Lord moves in mysterious ways.
Certification:
UK: NR; US: NR. (The film has not been rated by the BBFC, but I would expect it to be a ‘PG’. There is nothing I remember being in the least bit offensive about the film…. apart from the LGBTQ theme and if you are offended by that you are probably a MAGA ****!)
Talent:
Starring: Clare Duffy, Peter Egan, Laura Checkley.
Directed by: Aisling Bea.
Written by: Clare Duffy.
Running Time: 12m.
Review of “Our Father”:
Proving that good things come in small packages, this is a really nicely constructed little story, well-paced and well-filmed by Director of Photography Tomás Daly. As a short we flip between a limited number of locations: principally the confession box of the church and the local pub where Aoife is introducing her ‘special friend’ Gemma to her Dad. All of the acting in this is great, with Peter Egan adding his gravitas to the role.
There is also a beautiful little twist to the story that made me gasp when you realise it. It’s really something special and leads to a really feelgood ending.
Keep an eye out for Aisling Bea herself who has a cameo as ‘Gorgeous Church Hoover Lady’!
Summary Thoughts on “Our Father”
It’s a lovely bit of work and well worth your time in seeing. Mind you, I’m not sure yet how you would get to see this, but hopefully it will be available through some online outlet in the near future.
