A One Mann’s Movies review of “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021).

Bob the Movie Man Rating:

After the technical glory days of “The Matrix” in 1999 there were two increasingly dire sequels in 2003. So my hopes were not high for this dredging exercise. But even given those low expectations….

Plot Summary:

Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a video games developer being urged to develop a sequel to his best-selling video games trilogy “The Matrix”. But he has a sense that not all is right in the world, particularly when he meets mum Tiffany (Carrie-Anne Moss) in a local coffee shop.

“Matrix Resurrections” Review:

Positives:

  • Although there’s nothing as strikingly new in terms of effects compared to the original movie, it’s clear that a lot of movie making technical talent has gone into creating the special effects here.
  • Carrie Anne-Moss has such a screen presence, it’s amazing that she hasn’t had more prominent roles in her career.

Negatives:

  • This is just shambolically bad. The plot is a muddled heap of techno mumbo-jumbo which is JUST PLAIN DULL. It might have helped my comprehension if I had revisited the original trilogy before seeing this one… but I suspect only a little. Most of the action involves Neo waving his arms in front of himself to stop bullets;
    • Here’s some agents. (Wave hands).
    • Here’s some more zombie like hive-people. (Wave hands).
    • Ooh… the finale… erm… Two military helicopters firing heavy machine guns. (Wave hands).
  • The sound design is pretty awful. Either that, and/or the cast are dreadful mutterers. Jessica Henwick (otherwise a personable screen talent) was a particular culprit.

Monkeys?

I believe there is a post-credit monkey, but to be honest I couldn’t be arsed to sit through the credits to see it. By all accounts, it’s not worth the effort.

Summary Thoughts on “Matrix Resurrections”

I can normally look for at least some good in any movie. But this one was really a waste of celluloid. The year was only a few days old when I went to see this, but honestly I think this could already be a contender for my worst film of 2022. Avoid!
